An Easier Way to Save the Cheese
For many, plastic cling film is the answer to keeping cheese fresh. But fear not for there is still an old trick my grandmother taught me how to do that can keep cheese fresh up to three times as long! Realistically, no one wants to waste good cheese so lets get it down.
Why Cheese Goes Bad
Improper storage can increase the chances of cheese spoiling. The principal ones are the degrading effects of air and moisture. Cheese can dry out and develop mold if it is left t the mercies of air. If the cheese gets a little damp it will start growing bacteria and you don’t want to eat that! Cheese then needs to be vacuum packed in order that the product is covered quite well.
The Grandmother’s Trick
My grandmother would use parchment paper instead of cling film. This specially made paper allows the cheese to breath whilst keeping dirt and bacteria out. The most effective way and the easiest to follow.
Start by cutting yourself a piece of parchment paper that will wrap completely around the cheese. Put the cheese in a center of paper. Then take the paper and fold it over the top of your cheese, so that way all (yes…ALL) of your cheese is covered. Next, place the cheese that has been wrapped back into a reusable container or plastic bag to shield it from more air.
Storing the Wrapped Cheese
Then, put the cheese in plastic wrap into refrigerator. Some cheese should do well away fron too cold a place, such as on the middle shelf. This temperature preserves the freshness of the cheese yet prevents it from getting too firm.
Enjoying Fresh Cheese
This technique will keep you savoring soft cheese all year round, and it could not be any easier. And this trick is good for cheddar, mozzarella or gouda – just about anything you can think of! Be sure to inspect the cheese every day or 2 for mold during this time. Simpy cut it off if you find any.
This way you can now delight your cheese for longer and, with easy steps!
